Tony Hawk's Project 8

The return of the Hawk

There’s nothing more likely to uninspire me more than the re-release of games on an annual basis with minor gameplay tweaks in an attempt to ring every last drop out of a license and in the process sting the game playing public. This is a trend far more commonly found on the console market and is yet to really pollute the mobile games world in the same way.

This is the latest release of a Tony Hawk’s skateboarding game on mobile and what with the multiple console versions having done the rounds in the last few years, my cynicism wonders if this heinous crime is about to contaminate the mobile market.

Thankfully I am proved completely wrong with Tony Hawk’s Project 8, as Infospace have actually produced a completely different game from previous instalments. You no longer control Tony as such. Yes, he still performs all his skating tricks but the game has turned into a button timing frenzy in the Freddie Flintoff Blast ‘Em Cricket or Muppets Dance Party mould. As Tony wheels out his battered board and advances down one of the twelve courses on offer, a series of directional arrows scroll along the bottom of the screen, up, down, left and right. Once each arrow scrolls into the box in the left hand corner, the player needs to press the corresponding directional button on the phone keypad. This in turn enables Tony to perform tricks, jumps and the usual skateboarding tomfoolery with the success of the move depending on your timing and ability to press the correct buttons. As the game progresses, the number of arrows increases as does their pace, making the game gradually more difficult.

Perfecting your timing is what the game is all about. The more accurately you press the correct buttons, the more likely Tony is to successfully land after performing one of his moves and the bigger points bonuses you get.

To progress onto the next course you’ll need to finish your current course in one of the first three places with additional lastability provided by returning to each course and trying to achieve that all important first place. Achieving this unlocks the bonus ‘speed jam’ mode, which challenges you to race every course again without missing any of the tricks and is certainly the toughest part of the game.

Graphically the game feels very fresh yet simple. The backgrounds are impressively cool graffiti-artist type renderings and even though Tony Hawk himself is a mere dark shadowy figure, the animations during his performances are authentically smooth.

Sound is decent enough and manages to enhance the game rather than spoil it whilst keeping pace with the non-stop action and maintaining the already funky skater vibe.

There are a few disappointments though. You’ll be concentrating so much on the scrolling arrows, ensuring you get the timing spot on, that you never get to appreciate the game action and the splendid moves. In actual fact, that part of the game is a bit of an irrelevant sideshow which is a real shame. The skill factor of performing big tricks yourself and then being able to land them is also missing which some of the more hardcore thrill seekers might find a bit unrewarding. Another minor quibble would be the lack of variety in the game and in particular the courses which all appear very similar.

There is a real pick up and play feel to the game though, which will appeal to those not really searching for too much depth and the addition of a replay mode allowing the player to view their performances is not only entertaining but beneficial when attempting to improve your score.

Tony Hawk’s Project 8 is an enjoyable game, which is probably trying to be a bit more innovative than it actually is and should appeal more to casual gamers.
